COON RAPIDS, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's and women's golf teams close out their seasons beginning Saturday, taking part in the 54-hole Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships at Bunker Hills Golf Course.

Day 3 Recap 2014 Men's MIAC Championships Recap:• The final round at the 2014 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Golf Championships started with four teams vying for the title, all separated by just five shots, but it was Bethel that rose to the occasion and pulled away for its first-ever conference championship in men's golf. The Royals carded a final-round team score of 297 Monday to finish with a three-day total of 906 and win by six shots. Heading into the final round, Bethel held a three-shot lead over Gustavus, with Saint John's just a shot back of the Gusties and St. Thomas another shot back in fourth to set up a highly-anticipated final round, but the Royals' collective brilliance over the decisive 18 holes turned expected drama into a Bethel coronation. The Royals were three shots behind St. Thomas after Saturday's opening round with a score of 307, but they surged into the lead Sunday with a 302 and finished off the title Monday with their score of 297, which was tied for the lowest 18-hole score of the tournament with Concordia's final-round score |

Haley Jung (Monticello, Minn.) lowered her scores with each day of the three-day conference championships. Jung followed up her career-best round of 89 in the second round by notching a new career best with a final-round 88 for a 268 total (91-89-88) that helped the Cardinal women to an 11th-place team total of 1099 |

Day 3 Recap 2014 Women's MIAC Championships Recap:• The final 18 holes proved to be a historic day for the Carleton women's golf team. The Knights carded a MIAC record 299 over the final round of the 2014 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Women's Golf Championships to pull away from the field and claim their first-ever conference title in the sport. Carleton finished with a 54-hole record total of 935 for a convincing 21-shot victory. The Knights won their fifth-straight tournament of the fall by the comfortable final margin, but really caught fire over the final two days. Head coach Eric Sieger's team found itself in fourth place, three shots back of the co-leaders, after the first day, but Carleton used a 311 Sunday to surge into the lead by 10 shots after 36 holes. The Knights finished off their first women's golf conference championship with Monday's final-round 299, which is a MIAC Championships 18-hole record, and believed to be the first time a MIAC women's team had ever broken 300 for an 18 hole round. Blake Westerberg (Red Wing, Minn.)—who placed third overall among the 110 competitors at the Saint John's Invitational on Sept. 19-20—took home medalist honors at the Midwest Region Classic a week later, carding rounds of 68-75 for a one-under-par 143 total. … Westerberg's opening-round 68 was a school-record, one shot better than
Kyle Brodt's (Roseville, Minn.) 69 shot earlier this season. … Westerberg has now carded a round of even-par or better in each of his last three tournaments. The Cardinal senior carded an even-par 72 at the Saint John's Invitational on Sept. 20, and an even-par 71 at the Carthage/Tim Kopka Invitational on Sept. 11. … Westerberg, who has not had a round over 79 this season, has been a combined six-over in his last six rounds. … Westerberg has now recorded 28 rounds of 79 or better during his four-year collegiate career. … Westerberg currently owns a 79.07 career scoring average, ranking him third all-time behind Eric Thom (77.40) and Jesse Polk (78.33). …
Brett Jackson (Edmonton, Alberta) was second to Westerberg at last weekend's Midwest Region Classic, shooting 162 (80-82). … Jackson's second-round 83 at the Saint John's Invitational on Sept. 20 snapped a streak of five straight rounds of 75 or lower. … Jackson's second-round even-par 71 at the Carthage/Tim Kopka Invitational on Sept. 12 was his collegiate low round. …
Kyle Brodt (Roseville, Minn. / 82-86—168),
David Iten (Fridley, Minn. / 86-87—173), and
Connor Brandt (Woodbury, Minn. / 94-89—183) rounded out the Cardinal lineup at the Midwest Region Classic last weekend. … Brodt fired a then-school-record three-under-par 69 during the second day of the Augsburg Invitational on Sept. 5. … The Cardinals' second-day 299 at the Carthage/Tim Kopka Invitational on Sept. 12 was just two shots shy of the school record 297 Saint Mary's recorded during the second round of the Augsburg Invitational on Sept. 5.

Haley Jung (Monticello, Minn.) recorded career-best rounds of 83 and 81 to lead the Cardinals to a second-place showing at the Luther Invitational last weekend. … Jung's second-round 81 was the Cardinals' lowest round of the season, and the best performance since Gia Puch fired a seven-over 79 during the opening round of the 2009 MIAC Championships. …
Kaitlin Kling (LeRoy, Minn.) chipped in a 96-85—171 at the Luther Invitational, followed by
Madison Gately (Glenview, Ill.) who was third for the Cardinals with an 89-87—176.
Paula Avila (Weslaco, Texas / 95-95—190) and
Tiarra Thompson (Jonesboro, Ga. / 105-105—210) rounded out the Saint Mary's top five. … With her second-round 85 last Saturday at the Luther Invitational, Kling has now shot 88 or better in seven of her eight competitive rounds this season—including a career-best career-best 83 at the Wartburg Invitational was two shots better than her previous career-low round of 85—shot during both rounds of the Saint Benedict Invitational on Sept. 5-6, as well as during the 2014 D3 Classic. … Gately shot a career-best 87 during the second round of the Saint Benedict Invitational on Sept. 6. … Avila has now put together four consecutive rounds of 95—all collegiate bests. … Kling heads into the MIAC Championships as the team's scoring leader with an 86.63 scoring average, with Gately (90.00) and Jung (90.11) close behind.
