LAKE FOREST, Ill. — After managing just one goal for the second straight game in Saturday's 2-1 nonconference loss to Lake Forest, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's hockey team doubled its offensive production in Sunday's rematch with the third-ranked Foresters.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, so did the Foresters.
Lake Forest erupted for three goals in the first period and added an insurance tally late in the third in handing the Cardinals a 4-2 setback at Alumni Memorial Rink.
After managing just three goals in the entire 60-minute game on Saturday, the Cardinals and Foresters equaled that offensive performance—in the first period alone—on Sunday.
For the second straight contest, it was the Cardinals who got on the board first, as
Jamie Henderson (Madison, Wis.) scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season—assisted by
McKenna Parent (Anoka, Minn.)—seven minutes into the opening period.
The Cardinals' lead lasted less than a minute, however, as Michelle Greeneway scored the first of her two first-period goals just 33 seconds after Henderson's tally to knot the game at 1-1.
Lake Forest would take the lead for good at 14:24 on a goal by Leah Ebdon, and Greeneway would tack on her second of the period—and team-leading 20th of the season—to give the Foresters a 3-1 lead after the game's opening 20 minutes.
Rory Petrisin (High Bridge, N.J.) picked the perfect time to net her first goal of the season, as the senior took a feed from
Jesse Cwik (Chicago, Ill.) and beat Lake Forest goalie Jacqueline Audet just 1:42 into the second period to give the Forester lead to 3-2.
That, however, would be as close as the Cardinals would get, as Lake Forest 's Alex Stensland tacked on an insurance goal with 2:54 remaining in regulation to seal the win—the Foresters' 13th in their first 14 games (13-1-1).
Ashley Corcoran (Red Wing, Minn.)—making her third collegiate start—finished with 23 saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Audet, making her first start of the season, kicked out 12 of the 14 Saint Mary's shots she faced.
The Cardinals (4-7-2 overall) return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday, traveling to St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights, Minn., for a 2 p.m. MIAC contest. The two teams will then head to the Saint Mary's Ice Arena on Sunday for the second game of their two-game conference series, also a 2 p.m. start.
