ST. PAUL, Minn. — Just when Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's hockey coach
Terry Mannor thought his team had regained its scoring punch—erupting for four goals in Friday's 4-2 win over the Pipers—the Cardinal offense returned to its January hibernation in the teams' rematch on Saturday.
The Cardinals were held to one goal, a
Jane Hannula (Coon Rapids, Minn.) tally with five minutes remaining in regulation, which was just enough—for a 60-minute game.
Unfortunately for Mannor and the Cardinals, Saturday's showdown with the Pipers would not be decided in 60 minutes—and Brede Postier broke the 1-1 deadlock just 18 seconds into the overtime period, lifting Hamline to the 2-1 conference win at Oscar Johnson Arena.
After a scoreless first period—the third time in their last four games that the Cardinals have battled to a 0-0 tie after the game's opening 20 minutes—it was Hamline that got on the board first, as Chelsea Koehn beat Saint Mary's goalie
Marah Shields (Milford, Mich.) on the power play with less than two minutes until the second intermission.
The Pipers would cling to that one-goal advantage through most of the final period, before Hannula broke through, scoring her third of the season—and unassisted tally that sent the game into overtime.
That extra session did not last long, however, as Postier and the Pipers needed just 18 seconds to break the tie and earn a split in the teams' two-game conference series.
Shields certainly did her part between the pipes for the Cardinals, finishing with 43 saves, while HU's Mary Shefveland stopped 24 of the 25 Saint Mary's shots she faced.
The Cardinals (4-5-1 MIAC, 5-10-2 overall) return to action next weekend, heading to Ed Saugestad Arena in Minneapolis, Minn., on Friday for the first game of their two-game MIAC series against Augsburg. Game time is set for 7 p.m. Saint Mary's and the Auggies will then head to the Saint Mary's Ice Arena for Saturday's 2 p.m. rematch.
