RIVER FALLS, Wis. - Saint Mary's University of Minnesota track and field coach
Niels Anderson has seen plenty of solid performances from his Cardinal teams over the first two weeks of the indoor season.
And that trend continued Saturday afternoon at the UW-River Falls Falcon Winter Classic.
The Cardinal men, led by
Morris Dennis and
James Davis, boasted five top-3 finishes in placing fourth overall, while Becca Dups's second-place effort and Maria Missurelli's third-place showing led the way for the Cardinal women, who also placed fourth.
"I was pleased with the overall approach we took with the day," said Anderson. "We were able to see some of our competition from the MIAC, and that is always helpful early on in the season."
Dennis-who qualified for the NCAA outdoor national championships a year ago-picked up the Cardinals' lone first-place finish, stopping the clock in 51.76 to win the 400, while adding a fourth-place time of 23.52 in the 200.
James Davis chipped in a second-place showing in the 200 (23.21), while
Bryan Ortman,
Brandon Krogman, and
Austin O'Hare added thirds in the triple jump (13.28m), 1,000 (2:49.58), and 3,000 (9:12.63), respectively.
Jovan Newsom delivered a fifth in the 3,000 (9:24.47), and
Sherman Moga (1,000, 2;49.58) and
Jacob Hagen-Erickson (long jump, 6.17m) pitched in sixths, while
Joe Gardner (55 hurdles, 8.86),
Gordy Paulman (pole vault, 3.80m), and
Desmond Steward (long jump, 6.11m) all placed seventh.
Dup and Missurelli led the way for the Cardinal women, as Dup clocked a 7.68 in the 55 to finish second and Missurelli cleared 3.05 meters to place third in the pole vault. Saint Mary's also boasted three fifth-place efforts-Clare Siska (600, 1:48.10), Madaline Eichers (shot put, 9.03m), and Erika Thiel (3,000, 11:35.76)-with Kenzie Smedsrud adding a sixth in the 55 hurdles (9.63), and Eichers (weight throw, 11.86m) and Natalie King (shot put, 6.17m) recording eighth-place showings.
