LAKE FOREST, Ill. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's hockey team did something Saturday evening that only two other teams have been able to do against third-ranked Lake Forest—score first.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the Foresters may not have scored first, but they did score second—and third—as Lake Forest scored the game's final two goals in handing Saint Mary's a 2-1 nonconference setback at Alumni Memorial Rink.
Jesse Cwik (Chicago, Ill.) got the Cardinals on the board first, scoring her second of the season—off assists from
Rory Petrisin (High Bridge, N.J.) and
Kassie Lien (Grantsburg, Wis.)—13:37 into the opening period.
The Cardinals would maintain that one-goal lead—thanks in large part to the play of goalie
Tori Herrmann (Elk River, Minn.)—until later in the second, when Lake Forest's Kayla Griffith finally put one past the Saint Mary's senior to knot things at 1-1 heading to the third period.
And it was the Foresters who would break through again in the third period, as Caroline Campbell scored on a power play with 4:31 remaining in regulation to lift Lake Forest to its 12th win in 14 games (12-1-1).
Herrmann finished with 32 saves in goal for the Cardinals—including 14 in the second period—while Lake Forest goalie Allie Carter stopped 18 of the 19 Saint Mary's shots she faced.
The Cardinals (4-6-2 overall)—who have now played 11 straight games decided by two goals or less—get another shot at the Foresters on Sunday as the two teams are right back at Alumni Memorial Rink, squaring off in the second game of their two-game nonconference series. Opening face-off is set for 2 p.m.
