COON RAPIDS, Minn. — For the second day in a row,
David Iten (Fridley, Minn.) and
Hunter Rau (Rushford, Minn.) led the way for the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's golf team at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
Iten turned in the Cardinals' best round of the tournament on Monday, shooting a final-round six-over-par 78, while Rau chipped in his second straight seven-over 79 in helping Saint Mary's to a 54-hole total of 966 and a ninth-place team finish.
Iten—playing in his final conference championships, opened the three-day event with an 81, before adding a second-round 79 and Monday's 78 for a team-leading 238 total, two shots in front of Rau, who opened with an 82, before carding back-to-back 79s.
Brett Jackson (Edmonton, Alberta / 93-79-85—247),
Kyle Brodt (Roseville, Minn. / 80-80-87—247), and
Blair Sanders (Lee's Summit, Mo. / 84-85-81—250) rounded out the Cardinals' top five.
Saint John's, behind the one-under-par medalist honors of Sam Olson, ran away with the team title, posting a 15-over 879 team total (298-284-297), 18 shots better than runner-up Gustavus (297-302-298—=897). Bethel (302-303-300—905(), St. Thomas (299-308-306—913), and Concordia (305-315-306—926) rounded out the top five.
Olson, fueled by a four-under 68 during Sunday's second round, held off teammate Ryan Gallagher to post a two-shot victory. Olson completed the 54-hole event with a one-under 215 (72-68-75—215), two shots better than Gallagher (72-70-75—217), with Gustavus' Chris Captain (72-75-75—222) and Concordia's Cade Montplaisir (71-76-75—222) were seven shots back.
