COON RAPIDS, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's golf team shaved nine strokes off its opening-day performance at the season-ending Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships Sunday afternoon.
The Cardinals, who finished with a 326 during Saturday's opening round, put together a second-round 317 and are sitting ninth heading into Monday's final round.
Saint John's surged into the team lead, shooting a second-day 284—fueled by a four-under-par 68 by Sam Olson, a two-under 70 from Ryan Gallagher and a one-under 71 from Mack Farley. The Johnnies lead Gustavus by 17 strokes, with Bethel (605), St. Thomas (607), and Concordia (620) rounding out the top five.
The Johnnies' Olson (72-68—140) and Gallagher (72-70—142), hold down the top two spots individually, with Farley (76-71—147), Chris Captain of Gustavus (72-75—147), and Cade Montplasir of Concordia (71-76—147) all tied for third.
David Iten (Fridley, Minn.),
Hunter Rau (Rushford, Minn.), and
Brett Jackson (Edmonton, Alberta) all carded seven-over-par 79s Sunday to lead the way for the Cardinals, while
Kyle Brodt (Roseville, Minn.) notched his second straight eight-over 80 and
Blair Sanders (Lees Summit, Mo.) added an 85.
Brodt and Iten are tied for the team lead with 160 totals—Brodt going 80-80, while Iten shot rounds of 81-79. Rau is third at 161 (82-79), followed by Jackson (83-79—162) and Saunders (84-85—169).
The final round of the 54-hole tournament will be held on Monday at Bunker Hills Golf Course.
