Newsum, Dennis, Missurelli lead Cardinals

Meet Results | GameDay Preview

LA CROSSE, Wis. — As if squaring off against some of the top teams in the nation wasn't tough enough for the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota track and field teams—throw in conditions more conducive to a hockey game than a track meet, and the UW-La Crosse's Ashton May Invitational certainly put the Cardinals to the test.

And according to Saint Mary's coach Niels Anderson, the Cardinals passed with flying colors.

Jovan Newsum, Morris Dennis and Maria Missurelli led the Cardinal charge, as Newsum and Dennis posted top-5 finishes in the 18-team field, while Missurelli added a sixth-place effort in the pole vault.

Newsum had the race of the day for the Cardinal men, blowing away the rest of the 42-man field in winning the 5,000 with a time of 15:07.74. Dennis—the reigning MIAC Outdoor champion and NCAA national qualifier in the 400—collected a third-place showing in the event Saturday, clocking a time of 48.61, before adding a fifth-place time of 22.47 in the 200.

Missurelli, meanwhile, cleared 3.40 meters en route to her sixth-place showing in the pole vault.

Bryan Ortman also collected a top-10 finish for the Cardinal men, placing 10th in the long jump with a leap of 6.19 meters, while Jacob Hagen-Erickson chipped in a 6.05-meter showing. Brandon Krogman clocked a time of 2:01.23 in the 800, while other top performances included Ryan Buchmeier in the triple jump (10.72m), Joe Gardner in the 110 hurdles (17.21), James Davis in the 100 (11.38), Austin O'Hare in the 1,500 (4:08.04), and Phil Emmerich in the discus (31.91m).

Along with Missurelli's effort in the pole vault, other top showings for the Cardinal women included Becca Dup in the long jump (4.99m), Madeline Eichers in the hammer (36.95m) and shot put (9.55m), Kierra Walske in the shot put (9.36m), Kynzie Smedsrud in the 100 hurdles (17.59), Alicia Berkenes (5:20.39) and Allie Thiel (5:20.44) in the 1,500, Erica Thiel in the 5,000 (20:13.88), and Clare Siska in the 400 (1:15.03).

The Cardinals are back in action next Saturday, as Saint Mary's travels to St. Peter, Minn., to take part in Gustavus' Lee Krough Invitational.
