COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — If there's one thing that can be said about Saint Mary's University of Minnesota's
Maria Missurelli, it's that she's consistent.
For the third straight Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships, the Cardinal sophomore recorded a second-place finish in the pole vault Saturday afternoon.
Missurelli, who was second at last season's outdoor championships, and second again at this season's indoor championships in early March, was at it again on Saturday, clearing 3.30 meters en route to her All-MIAC First-Team second-place effort.
Jovan Newsum (Glendale Heights, Ill.) and
Bryan Ortman (Chicago, Ill.) led the way for the Cardinal men, placing fourth in the 5,000 and the triple jump, respectively.
Fueled by Missurelli on the women's side, and the honorable-mention efforts of Newsum and Ortman on the men's, the Cardinal women finished 12th in the team standings, with the Saint Mary's men placing 10th.
Newsum clocked a time of 15:14.77 to post his fourth-place finish in the 5,000, while Ortman posted a leap of 13.70 meters in placing fourth in the triple jump.
Morris Dennis (Elk River, Minn.) and
Austin O'Hare (Rushford, Minn.) joined Newsum and Ortman as honorable-mention All-MIAC performers, earning fifth-place finishes in the 400 and steeplechase, respectively.
Dennis stopped the clock in 49.43 en route to his fifth in the 400, and O'Hare posted a time of 9:43.05 to notch his fifth-place showing in the steeplechase. The Cardinal men's 4x100 relay team of
James Davis,
Andrew Allemann,
Phil Emmerich, and
Desmond Steward (Bayside, Wis.) chipped in a seventh-place time of 44.83, while
Becca Dup (Albert Lea, Minn.) chipped in a seventh in the 200 (26.56),
Desmond Steward tallied a seventh in the triple jump (12.99m), and
Brandon Krogman (Owatonna, Minn.) finished eighth in the 800 (2:06.20).
Krogman, Davis, Emmerich and Dennis closed out the meet for the Cardinals, posting a time of 3:28.64 to finish 10
th in the 4x400 relay.
St. Thomas made it 12 women's titles in a row with a dominant team performance. The Tommies scored 191.3 points to nearly double up the rest of the field, with a 91.3-point lead—or more—on everyone else in the MIAC. Carleton moved up into second place on the second day with an even 100 points, and Concordia rounded out the top three with 88.8 points. Gustavus was just three points behind the Cobbers in fourth with 85, and Bethel's 76.5 points were also good for a spot in the top 10. Saint Benedict was sixth with 71 points, St. Olaf (56.3) edged Hamline (56) by less than a point for seventh, Macalester was ninth (49), St. Catherine (42) finished 10th and Augsburg (28) and Saint Mary's (12) rounded out the final standings.
The St. Thomas men held off host Saint John's second-day charge to post its fifth straight outdoor team title. St. Thomas scored exactly 100 points on Saturday to boost its championship-winning total to 184 points. Saint John's kept pace and finished with 156.5 points to stay solidly in second. Hamline also topped the century mark with 108 points in third, St. Olaf's 98 points were good for fourth and Carleton scored 61 to also join the top five. Bethel was just four points behind the Knights in sixth with 57, Gustavus (55) was another two points back in seventh, Concordia scored 48 in eighth, Augsburg had 40 to finish ninth and Saint Mary's (27) and Macalester (21) completed the final 2016 standings.
Saint Mary's Day 1: Madeline Eichers posted a career-best throw of 40.4 meters to place seventh in the hammer throw. Eichers was one of three Cardinal individuals to place Friday afternoon, as
Bryan Ortman added an eighth-placing showing in the long jump (6.55 meters) and
Ross Kinderman chipped in a 10
th in the javelin (45.60 meters). The Cardinal men's 4x800 relay team of
Brandon Krogman,
Jared Wolt,
Jovan Newsum, and
Austin O'Hare also recorded a top-10 performance, posting a seventh-place time of 8:14.56
Other Cardinal performers who did not make event finals included
Jacob Hagen-Erickson in the long jump (6.14m), Dennis in the 200 (22.92), Emmerich (60.81) and
Joe Gardner (68.00) in the 400 hurdles,
Desmond Steward in the 100 (11.82), Davis in the 100 (11.49) and 200 (22.64),
Alicia Berkenes in the 1,500 (5:12.89),
Kynzie Smedsrud in the 100 (17.85) and 400 (77.33) hurdles,
Allie Thiel (2:37.33) in the 800, and
Clare Siska in the 400 hurdles (73.41).
