Kemper, Newsum, Ortman, Missurelli lead charge

MANKATO, Minn. — All season long, Maria Missurelli has been in the pole vault spotlight for the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota track and field teams.
 
Wednesday evening, Missurelli was at it again, posting a third-place vault of 3.45 meters at the Minnesota State-Mankato Twilight—only this time, the sophomore's effort was the second-best Cardinal performance in the event.
 
David Kemper narrowly missed the school record, winning the men's pole vault by clearing 4.40 meters at the non-team-scored, mid-week event.
 
Jovan Newsum, coming off a record-setting performance in the 5,000 at Macalester last Thursday, posted the Cardinal men's second first-place showing, winning the 1,500 with a time of 4:02.65.
 
Bryan Ortman chipped in a second-place leap of 13.57 in triple jump for the Cardinal men, while Desmond Steward was fourth (13.40m) and Jacob Hagen-Erickson (11.99m) was sixth. Jared Wolt finished fifth in the 800 (2:08.42) and Austin O'Hare recorded a sixth in the 1,500 (4:14.57), while James Davis was sixth in the 200 (22.16) and eighth in the 100 (11.29), and Morris Dennis finished eighth in the 200 (22.96). Gordy Paulman chipped in a seventh in the pole vault (3.80m) and Luis Avila chipped in an eighth in the long jump (6.21m) and a ninth in the 400 (54.45)
 
Clare Siska chipped in a fourth-place time of 73.63 in the 400 hurdles for the Cardinal women, while Erica Thiel clocked a time of 19:50.49 to place fourth in the 5,000. Kynzie Smedsrud placed seventh in the 100 hurdles (17.01), Allie Thiel was eighth in the 1,500 (5:14.50), Natalie King was ninth in the hammer (38.10m), and  Molly Abraham and Olivia Kostueck were 10th in the 400 (68.43) and hammer (30.81m), respectively.
 
The Cardinals are right back in action on Saturday, heading across town to Paul Giel Field to take part in the Winona State Warrior Challenge.
