ST. PETER, Minn. — After scoring in the game's opening minutes in each of their last two games—both wins—the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown against Gustavus Tuesday followed a little different storyline.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the final chapter was not what coach
Pete Watkins was hoping for.
Gustavus scored the game's only goal 1:55 into the second overtime, as the Gusties snapped Saint Mary's two-game winning streak with a 1-0 victory.
For the second time in as many meetings, the Cardinals and Gusties were deadlocked after 90 minutes of regulation—and 10 minutes of overtime.
Unlike like last year's 0-0, double-overtime deadlock, however, the Gusties finally broke the ice 1:55 into the second 10-minute extra period, as Henry Brose headed in a corner kick from Matt Ouren to give Gustavus their first conference win of the season.
Nate Levy (Byron, Minn.) did everything he could to keep the Gusties off the scoreboard, as the Cardinal junior finished with nine saves—one shy of collegiate best—stopping six first-half shots, and all three Gustavus attempts in the second half.
The Cardinals (2-2-0 MIAC, 5-4-0 overall) are back in action on Saturday, entertaining Concordia in a 1 p.m. conference game at Ochrymowycz Field.
