Hamline deals Cardinals 4-2 conference setback

WINONA, Minn. — Friday evening, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota and Hamline women's hockey teams combined for 12 goals—including hat tricks by the Cardinals' Jamie Henderson (Madison, Wis.) and the Pipers' Darby Dodds.

Less than 24 hours later, the same two teams were back on the ice for the second game of their two-game Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series.

And Henderson and Dodds were once again lighting up the scoresheet.

Henderson, coming off her first collegiate three-goal game, scored her fourth of the series with less than a minute remaining in regulation, while Dodds assisted on both of Hamline's first two goals as the teams skated to a 2-2 deadlock after two periods.

Unfortunately, the Cardinals could not keep Dodds off the scoresheet in the third period, as she netted an empty net goal to cap the Pipers' two-goal third period and seal their 4-2 win over the Cardinals at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.

Bre Simon proved to be a real thorn in the Cardinals' side early, scoring a pair of first-period goals to give Hamline a 2-0 lead after the game's opening 20 minutes.

Bailey Wendt (Coon Rapids, Minn.) continued her torrid scoring, netting her third goal in as many games to cut the deficit to one, 2-1, just 2:29 into the second period.

Henderson would pull the Cardinals even, scoring her fourth goal of the weekend—and team-leading eighth of the season—with 59 seconds remaining in the middle frame.

Hamline would grab the lead for good at 7:27 of the third on a power-play goal by Jaci Reinke, before Dodds iced the win with her empty netter with five seconds remaining in regulation.

Marah Shields (Mitford, Mich.) finished with 30 saves for the Cardinals—including 14 in the first period and 11 in the second—while Jaime Hathaway kicked out 15 of Saint Mary's 17 shots in goal for the Cobbers.

The Cardinals (1-7-2 MIAC, 4-11-2 overall) return to the Saint Mary's Ice Arena next Friday for the first game of their two-game conference series against Augsburg. The two teams will then head to Ed Saugestad Rink in Minneapolis, Minn., for Saturday's 7 p.m. rematch.
