WINONA, Minn. — Macalester entered Friday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team ranked No. 17 in the nation.
Â
And the Cardinals got a first-hand look at why the Scots are considered among the best in the country.
Â
Macalester scored single goals in each half—and limited Saint Mary's to just three shots on goal—as the Scots dealt the Cardinals a 2-0 setback at Ochrymowycz Field.
Â
The Scots did not waste any time grabbing the upper hand, scoring in the game's fifth minute as Zach Moore headed a Jake Burke corner kick past Saint Mary's goalkeeper
Nate Levy (Byron, Minn.) for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Â
Macalester was at its quick-striking best to open the second half as well, as Moore recorded his second goal of the night, ripping a rebound past Levy three minutes in.
Â
Saint Mary's applied plenty of pressure over the game's final 45 minutes, but could not break through against Macalester goalkeeper Colton Wenig, who stopped all three Cardinal shots in the second-half to earn the shutout.
Â
Levy was busy between the pipes for the Cardinals, finishing with eight saves—including six in the second half.
Â
The Cardinals (2-6-0 MIAC, 8-8-0 overall) are back in action on Wednesday, traveling to Northfield, Minn., for a 3:30 p.m. conference contest against Carleton.
