NORTHFIELD, Minn. — There's something about playing Carleton that makes the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team in general—and goalkeeper
Nate Levy (Byron, Minn.) in particular—have to put in a little extra work.
For the second year in a row, the Cardinals and Knights battled into a second overtime Tuesday afternoon in their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Bell Field.
Unlike a year ago, however—when Carleton scored on a penalty kick in the second minute of the second overtime en route to a 2-1 victory—this time around, the Cardinals were able to come away with a conference point.
Thanks to the efforts of their senior goalkeeper.
Levy, who made a career-high 13 saves in last year's 2 OT loss to the Knights, was once again busy between the pipes on Tuesday, stopping all 12 Carleton shots in leading the Cardinals to a 0-0 double-overtime tie.
Carleton boasted a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal, but the Knights could not solve Levy, who recorded more than 10 saves in a goal for the fifth time in his collegiate career. Levy finished with five saves in both the first and second halves, and added two more saves in the first 10-minute overtime.
Carleton goalkeeper Brandon Hilliard stopped both Saint Mary's shots—on in each half—before giving way to Aidan Mullan in the 85th minute. Mullan did not have to make a save in his 25 minutes of relief work.
The Cardinals (2-6-1 MIAC, 8-8-1) close out their regular-season on Saturday, playing host to Concordia in a 1 p.m. conference match. The showdown with the Cobbers will also be the final collegiate game for Saint Mary's seniors Levy,
Sean Butcher (Cave Creek, Ariz.),
Garrett Grunke (Verona, Wis.),
Adam Estrada (Rockford, Ill.),
Mike Doheny (Lake Zurich, Ill.), and
Jared Wolt (Farmington, Minn.)
