Cardinals post strong showing at Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota swimming and diving teams kicked off the season in impressive fashion last Saturday during their double-dual against Gustavus and Iowa Lakes Community College.
 
And the Cardinals picked up right where they left off Saturday at the Hamline Invitational.
 
Saint Mary's picked up 11 top-three finishes, as the Cardinal women placed third, while the men finished fourth.
 
Abby Hauser (Waukesha, Wis.) led the way for the Cardinals with a 1-2-3 performance—winning the 100 breaststroke, while placing second in the 200 IM (2:24.76) and third in the 100 freestyle. Hauser's 2:24.76 in the 200 IM was the third-fastest in program history, while her 57.94 in the 100 freestyle was fifth all-time.
 
Brooke Shefchik (Stevens Point, Wis.) chipped in a second in the 1,000 freestyle (11:52.10) and a third in the 500 freestyle (5:50.79), with Alyssa Haram (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Kierra Walske (Rochester, Minn.) also posting third-place efforts—Haram's in the 200 freestyle (2:11.65) and Walske's in the three-meter diving (183.70).
 
Other top performances for the Cardinal women included: Haram in the 500 freestyle (5th, 5:57.13); Amanda Hansen (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) in the 1,000 freestyle (5th / 12:27.30) and 500 freestyle (8th / 6:09.21), Alexis Holliday (South Milwaukee, Wis.) in the 1,000 freestyle (6th / 12:28.74) and 500 freestyle (6th / 5:57.59), Kayla Boettcher (Colfax, Wis.) in the one-meter diving (6th / 160.00 ), and Erica Camarato (DeForest, Wis.) in the 100 breaststroke (8th / 1:19.14).
 
On the men's side, Jack McCormick (Milwaukee, Wis.) notched a pair of third-place finishes—posting the fifth-fastest time in program history in the 1,000 freestyle (10:40.62) and adding a time of 5:13.77 in the 500 freestyle. Griffin Rades (Shawno, Wis.) also recorded a pair of third-place showings in the 200 IM (2:06.81) and 100 breaststroke (1:04.88), and also added a fourth in the 100 backstroke (58.97). Jack Wells (Glenview, Ill.)  also had a busy day, notching a fourth in the 50 freestyle (23.03) and a 5th in the 200 freestyle (1:57.53).
 
The Cardinals return to St. Paul, Minn., next Saturday, taking part in Macalester's Roger Ahlman Invitational.
