ST. PAUL, Minn. — Heading into the 2017 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's track and field team had never scored more than 27 points in the indoor season-ending event.
The Cardinals just missed that number Saturday afternoon, scoring 26 points as a team to finish in 10
th place. The Saint Mary's women, meanwhile, posted a 10
th place finish with 16.50 points.
Saint Mary's certainly had plenty of impressive individual performances during the final day of the two-day event, highlighted by
Becca Dup's win in long jump. The sophomore entered the meet as the top jumper in the conference, as her jump of 5.53 was the best in the MIAC by several centimeters. While Dup wasn't able to duplicate that jump in the finals, she still jumped the farthest of any competitor in the MIAC, becoming the Cardinals first MIAC Champion in multiple years with a winning jump of 5.43 meters. She also clocked an 11
th place finish in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.67.
Desmond Steward also starred for Saint Mary's on day two of the MIAC Indoor Track and Field Championship. Steward finished second in the triple jump with a distance of 13.78 meters, a season best for the sophomore who entered the competition as the No. 6 seed with a distance of 13.14 meters. His teammate,
Dean Marlin, also competed in the same event.
Bailey Joens was yet another Cardinal to find success in the field events. Joens finished in a five-way tie for seventh place in the high jump competition after clearing a high of 1.51 meters.
Saint Mary's 4x200 relay team clocked a top-8 time as well to highlight the Cardinals day on the track. The team of
Kyle Lichttenegger,
Gordy Paulman,
Andrew Allemann and Stewart finished the relay in 1:33.16, which was fast enough for sixth place.
Saint Mary's picked up right where it left off in the distance events Saturday morning and early afternoon.
Austin O'Hare finished 12
th in the 3000 meter run with a time of 8:57.20, while
Ben Borash competed in the 1000 meter run.
On the women's side,
Danielle Franke ran in the 3000 meter run, and
Brandon Krogman competed in the 600 meter run.
At the end of the two day meet, Saint Mary's women's team finished in 10th place with 16.50 points while the men's team was in 10
th with 16 points. More information on the 2017 MIAC Indoor Track and Field Competition can be found on the conference's official championship page.
