APPLETON, Wis. — First-game jitters? What first-game jitters?
The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's soccer team kicked off its season with an impressive 4-0 nonconference victory over Lawrence Friday evening—with all four goals being scored by freshmen appearing in their first collegiate games.
Mary Loy (Burien, Wash.) and
Becca Dup (Albert Lea, Minn.) proved to be a fairly lethal one-two combination, as Loy scored her first two collegiate goals—both off assists from Dup—while fellow freshmen
Mackenzie Waters (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and
Mary Arnold (Winona, Minn.) also found the back of the net for the first time in a Cardinal uniform.
Loy got Saint Mary's on the board in the 21
st minute, and Waters pushed that lead to 2-0 nine minutes later. Just over four minutes into the second half, the Dup-to-Loy combination struck again, and Arnold rounded out the scoring in the game's 70
th minute.
Gabriella Pederson (Chaska, Minn.) picked up the shutout in goal for the Cardinals, stopping all seven Lawrence shots, while Vikings' goalkeeper Katlyn Seiffert stopped just one of Saint Mary's four shots.
The Cardinals (1-0 overall) are back in action on Monday, traveling to Ripon, Wis., for a 1 p.m. nonconference game against Ripon.
