WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's and women's swimming and diving teams officially kick off the 2018-19 seasons on Saturday, as the Cardinals entertain Iowa Lakes Community College and Gustavus. Action begins at noon at the Jul Gernes Pool

Griffin Rades (Shawano, Wis.) made the most of his first MIAC Championships, breaking six school records — including the 19-year-old 200 freestyle mark a year ago. … Rades touched the wall in a school-record 1:58.92 in the 200 IM preliminaries to finish 12
th overall — and earn a spot in the B Final, where he re-broke that mark with a new school-record time of 1:56.35. … In the 400 IM, Rades whittled nearly four seconds off the previous school record—stopping the clock in 4:15.52 — to qualify fourth for the evening final. In the A Final, Rades was at his best yet, knocking another four seconds off his not-very-old school record, holding down the fourth spot in the eight-person final with a time of 4:11.11. … Leading off the Cardinals' 800 freestyle relay, Rades set school-record No. 5, swimming the first 200 yards in 1:46.96—besting the 19-year-old record held by Rick Loeffelholz. … In his final event of the three-day championships, Rades won the B Final in the 200 breaststroke, setting a new school record with a winning time of 2:12.47. … In his final MIAC Championships appearance,
Brian Mockler (Dubuque, Iowa) cut 10 seconds off his season-best time in the 200 breaststroke, touching the wall in 2:23.78, while cutting 13 seconds off his PR with a time of 5:14.37 in the 500 freestyle. … Mockler and
Claire King (Red Wing, Minn.) both narrowly missed reaching the B Final in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke, respectively, at the season-ending MIAC Championships last season. King clocked a season-best 1:05.60 to finish 17
th—while Mockler matched that 17
th-place showing with his 100 breaststroke time of 1:02.91. … The Cardinal women's 800 freestyle relay team set a school record during the first day of the three-day Rochester Invitational on Dec. 1—touching the wall in 8:32.71, easily breaking the old school mark of 8:37.08, set in 1999. … The Cardinals qualified for the finals in 11 events during the three-day Rochester Invitational on Dec. 1-3.
