JORDAN, Minn. — With Mother Nature doing her best to make life miserable on Sunday — and a forecast that called for virtually unplayable conditions for Monday's final round — the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships were shortened to two days.
Which meant the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's golf team, and the rest of the conference teams, were forced to play 36 holes Sunday — in conditions more suited for late November, not early October.
The weather and the extra 18 holes did not seem to bother the Cardinals, however, as Saint Mary's — behind a second-round 72 from
Kyle Brodt (Roseville, Minn.) and a final-round 73 from
Joe Abdo (Edina, Minn.) — placed eighth in the 54-hole event.
St. Thomas took home the team title, finishing at 882 (291-208-293) — four shots in front of both Gustavus (307-291-288) and Augsburg (298-293-205) — with Saint John's (301-299-297—897) and St. Olaf (291-304-208) rounding out the top five.
In the final MIAC Championships of his collegiate career, Brodt finished tied for 11
th individually, shooting rounds of 75-72-77—224 to lead the way for the Cardinals. Abdo — making his first championships appearance, adding rounds of 81-80-73—234, followed by
Bryce Galewski (Winona, Minn. / 78-79-82—239),
Tyler Dove (Hudson, Wis. / 81-80-78—239), and
Juan Sanchez (Bogota, Colombia / 82-71-81—244).
Gustavus' Jacob Pedersen earned medalist honors, shooting a 210 (70-69-71) for a four-shot win over St. Thomas' Emmet Herb (70-71-73—214) and Bethel's Noah Bragg (73-71-70—214), with Brett Buckingham of Augsburg (70-72-75—217) and St. Thomas' Peder Larson (71-77-71—219) rounding out the top five.
