APPLETON, Wis. — After a pair of matches in which the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis team played well enough to win, but came out on the short end of both decisions against Concordia and Saint John's, the Cardinals were finally rewarded for their efforts Saturday evening.

Saint Mary's jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the three doubles matches and added wins in four of the six singles matches to post a 6-3 nonconference win over Lawrence at the Fox Cities Racquet Club.

"This was a great win over a tough, tough Lawrence team," said Saint Mary's coach Jeff Halberg. "We played very well under pressure."

Brenden Amiotte (Rapid City, S.D.) and Bobby Tiedemann (Euclid, Minn.) picked up an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles, while Brett Giesen (Cato, Wis.) and Alex Zuzek (Hastings, Minn.) added an 8-5 victory at No. 3 to give Saint Mary's the early 2-1 advantage.

Amiotte, Tiedemann, and Alec Rudh (Hastings, Minn.) recorded straight-set singles wins, and Robbie Sobczak (Cloquet, Minn.) rallied from a set down to post a 3-6, 6-2, 11-9 win at No. 4 to seal the streak-snapping victory.

Saint Mary's (5-10 overall)—which put an end to its two-match losing streak with the victory—is right back in action on Sunday, traveling to the Western Racquet Club in Green Bay, Wis., for a 9 a.m. nonconference match against St Norbert.
