WINONA, Minn. — There were plenty of new faces roaming the sidelines for the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team Friday evening.
And the newcomers certainly made their presence felt.
The Cardinals got first collegiate goals from both
Johnluke Nahorski (Minnetonka, Minn.) and
Eli Szymanski La Crosse, Wis.) en route to a 3-1 season-opening, nonconference win over North Central at Ochrymowycz Field.
Nahorski got things rolling for the Cardinals early in the first half, taking a feed from
Mateo Means (Dallas, Texas) and beating North Central goalkeeper Gabe Hartwig just 14 minutes into the opening half.
The Cardinals would cling to that one-goal lead through the remainder of the first half—and through the first 12 minutes of the second.
And then the floodgates opened, as
Josh Balsiger (Camas, Wash.) and Szymanski scored 72 seconds apart to push the Saint Mary's lead to 3-0.
Tian Elder foiled Saint Mary's goalkeeper
Alberto Centeno's (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) shutout bid, scoring in the 78
th minute to make it a 3-1 game.
Centeno finished with four saves for the Cardinals, while Hartwig also made four saves in goal for the Rams.
The Cardinals (1-0-0 overall)—winners of their season opener for the fourth straight season—are right back in action on Saturday, heading to New Ulm, Minn., for a 3 p.m. nonconference game against Martin Luther.
