WINONA, Minn. —
Alberto Centeno (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) did everything he could to give the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's soccer team a win in its nonconference game against Loras Wednesday evening.
Unfortunately, Centeno's Herculean effort — which included a career-high 18 saves — was not enough to get the Cardinals a win over the Duhawks.
Loras' Luke Denson scored off a corner kick just 1:49 into the second overtime period, lifting the Duhawks to a 1-0 win over the Cardinals at Ochrymowycz Field.
The Duhawks threw everything but the proverbial kitchen sink at Centeno for 101 minutes, but the senior was up the challenge, finishing with eight saves in the opening 45 minutes, eight more in the second half, and two in the first overtime period.
Centeno's 18-save effort was the highest single-game performance since Jon Szafranski stopped 18 shots against Viterbo on Sept. 23, 2009.
Jesse Buffington was not nearly as busy in the Loras goal, stopping both Saint Mary's shots — one in each half — in posting the shutout.
The Cardinals (3-4-0 overall) return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday, hosting Augsburg in a 3:30 p.m. contest at Ochrymowycz Field.
