WINONA, Minn. — During her first two seasons as a member of the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's soccer team,
Maura Michener (Winona, Minn.) scored one goal — combined.
Mary Loy (Burien, Wash.), meanwhile, entered Wednesday's nonconference game against UW-River Falls with 10 career goals as a Cardinal — including four this season.
Make that five goals this season — for both.
Michener and Loy provided the perfect 1-2 punch for the Cardinals — scoring goals 20 minutes apart in the second half to lift Saint Mary's to a 2-1 nonconference win over UW-River Falls at Ochrymowycz Field.
After a scoreless first half — in which Saint Mary's held a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal — the Cardinals' offense finally got on track.
Thanks to Michener.
Michener took a feed from
Dara Kaiser (Bozeman, Mont.) and rifled a shot past UW-River Falls' goalkeeper Amanda Ladue to give Saint Mary's a 1-0 lead.
The Falcons netted the equalizer on a goal by Alanya Westerman in the 84
th minute, but the deadlock did not last long, as Loy corralled a loose ball and scored her fifth of the season — scoring just 33 seconds after Westerman's goal to give the Cardinals the lead for good.
Gabriella Pederson (Chaska, Minn.) collected five saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Westerman stopped four of Saint Mary's six shots on goal.
The Cardinals (5-2-0 overall) are back in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday, playing host to Augsburg in a 1 p.m. showdown at Ochrymowycz Field.
