NORTHFIELD, Minn. — A year ago, the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team snapped a 12-game losing streak against Carleton with a 3-2, double-overtime Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory.
Â
Tuesday afternoon, the Cardinals were once again extended to a second OT against the Knights, this time earning a 1-1 conference tie at Carleton's Bell Field.
Â
Carleton — coming off a 0-0, 2 OT stalemate against 20th-ranked St. Thomas on Saturday — certainly did not waste any time getting its offense revved up, scoring just 27 seconds into the first half on goal by Rainey Tilley.
Â
The lead did not last long, however, as Cardinal sharpshooter
Jordyn Matthews (Seattle, Wash.) pulled the Cardinals even in the 22nd minute, scoring her team- and conference-leading 13th goal of the season, off an assist from
Sophia O'Neil (South Jordan, Utah).
Â
With two goals in the game's first 22 minutes, it appeared as if the Cardinals and Knights were in for plenty of offensive fireworks.
Â
The two teams' defenses, however, had other ideas.
Â
Neither team could break the deadlock over the final 32 minutes of the first half … or in the 45-minute second half … or the two, 10-minute overtime periods, leaving Saint Mary's to settle for its first tie of the season.
Â
Alexis Nguyen () — making her second consecutive start in goal for the Cardinals — finished with five saves, while Carleton's Jenna Roethler stopped four of Saint Mary's five shots on goal.
Â
The Cardinals (0-6-1 MIAC, 6-6-1 overall) return home for Senior Day on Saturday, hosting Concordia in a 3:30 p.m. conference matchup at Ochrymowycz Field. The Knights (3-1-2 MIAC, 7-2-3 overall) take to the road on Saturday, traveling to St. Peter, Minn., for a 3:30 p.m. MIAC showdown against Gustavus.
