WINONA, Minn. — If the Saint Mary's University and Concordia women's soccer teams proved anything the last two seasons, it's that 90 minutes of soccer just isn't enough to determine a winner.
Â
Two years ago, the two teams battled to a 0-0, double-overtime stalemate, and last season, the Cobbers escaped with a 3-2 victory, scoring three minutes into the first overtime period.
Â
And Saturday was no different
Â
For the third straight year, Saint Mary's and Concordia needed extra time to determine a winner — and thanks to
Genesis Capacio (Las Vegas, Nev.), the Cardinals left Ochrymowycz Field with the victory.
Â
Capacio picked the perfect opportunity to net her first collegiate goal, scoring in the second minute of the second overtime to lift the Cardinals to the 1-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory.
Â
The Cardinals held an 11-4 advantage in shots — including a 5-2 edge in shots on goal.
Â
Gabriella Pederson (Chaska, Minn.) — one of three seniors honored on Senior Day — did a perfect impersonation of a brick wall between the pipes for the Cardinals, stopping both first-half Cobber shots en route to her sixth shutout of the season and 13th of her collegiate career.
Â
Erin Larsen made four saves in goal for the Cobbers, but could not come up with the stop on Capacio's 2 OT game-winner, which was assisted by
Mary Loy (Burien, Wash.)
Â
The Cardinals (1-6-0 MIAC, 7-6-0 overall) step out of conference play for a final time on Wednesday, heading to River Falls, Wis., for a 3 p.m. matchup against UW-River Falls. The Cobbers (1-6-0 MIAC, 8-6-0 overall), meanwhile, are now off until next Saturday, when they return home to Moorhead, Minn., for a 1 p.m. MIAC showdown against Gustavus
