JACKSON, Wis. — It wasn't a fourth straight 9-0 victory — but it was the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis team's eighth straight win.
The Cardinals picked up wins in two of the three doubles matches and recorded four straight-set singles victories in rolling to a 6-3 nonconference win over Concordia (Wis.) Sunday at Pleasant Valley Tennis Center.
"The ladies played a great match against a quality Concordia squad," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "We knew going in that we were going to have our hands full — Concordia is sitting second in their conference and has a legitimate shot at nationals — so we needed to play well to get the result we want.
"And that's exactly what we did."
Cassandra Barr (Eau Claire, Wis.) and
Kennedy Morgan (Green Bay, Wis.) teamed for an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles and
Julia Boeve (St. James, Minn.)/
Kailee Johnson (Rochester, Minn.) chipped in an 8-3 victory at No. 3.
Laura Sonday (West St. Paul, Minn.),
Colleen Lois (Green Bay, Wis.), Boeve, and
Madyson Schreiber (Edwardsville, Ill.) each collected straight-set singles wins to complete the win.
With her convincing 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4 was her 57th career singles victory, moving the senior into a tie for the program lead with Megan Vandenberg and Bailey Edwards.
The Cardinals (10-5 overall) are in for another busy three-day stretch next weekend, sandwiching conference matches against Hamline at home on Friday and at Saint Benedict on Sunday, around a road nonconference match at UW-River Falls.
