WINONA, Minn. — There was plenty of history being made at the Winona Tennis Center Friday evening.
Julia Boeve (St. James, Minn.) became the all-time career singles wins leader — picking up her 58th career win with a straight-set victory at No. 4 — and in the process, helped the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis team collected its program record-tying ninth straight win, a 6-3 conference victory over Hamline.
"What a great win for the ladies," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "We knew that Hamline was going to come in and give us a good fight — and they certainly did that. But we were determined and put together a solid team effort to get the win."
The Cardinals got out to a solid start in doubles play, collecting wins by
Laura Sonday (West St. Paul, Minn.)/
Colleen Lois (Green Bay, Wis.) at No. 1 and Boeve/
Kailee Johnson (Rochester, Minn.) at No. 3 to grab a 2-1 lead.
Lois rolled to a convincing 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles, and Boeve notched career win No. 58 to give the Cardinals a 4-3 lead — and
Madyson Schreiber and
Kennedy Morgan sealed the win with straight-set victories at No. 5 and No. 6.
"I'm so happy for Julia — an honor greatly deserved," said Halberg of his senior record-setter. "Julia is money — day-in and day-out."
The Cardinals (5-3 MIAC, 11-5 overall) are right back in action on Saturday, stepping out of conference play with a 1 p.m. matchup against UW-River Falls in River Falls, Wis.
