DUBUQUE, Iowa — The Saint Mary's men's soccer team — fresh off a season-opening 5-0 nonconference win over Marian — hit the road for the first time this season Wednesday evening, squaring off against Loras in a nonconference matchup.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, their first road game of the season did not have the same favorable outcome as they first home game of the season.
After scoring five goals in that season-opening win over Marian, the Cardinals were held off the scoreboard against Loras, as the Duhawks erupted for four second-half goals in dealing Saint Mary's a 4-0 setback at Rock Bowl.
After a scoreless first half — in which both teams managed one shot on goal — the Duhawks turned up the offensive heat, scoring three times before the second half was 11 minutes old.
Silva Gzikas broke the scoreless deadlock in the 49th minute and Tigrio Huerta added a penalty kick goal three minutes later to make it 2-0. Mark Histed found the back of the net in the 56th minute to push the Duhawk lead to 3-0, and Zeus Huerta rounded out the scoring with his first of the season in the 72nd minute.
Michael Maniak (Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) made three saves in 76 minutes of work, before giving way to
Jimmy Perreault (Batavia, Ill.), who stopped the lone shot he faced over the game's final 14 minutes.
The Cardinals (1-1-0 overall) are back on the road on Saturday, heading to Madison, Wis., for a 5 p.m. nonconference showdown against Edgewood.
