FOND DU LAC, Wis. —Â
Jordyn Matthews (Seattle, Wash.) and
Mary Loy (Burien, Wash.) are proving to be a rather lethal one-two combination for the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team.
Â
Matthews and Loy — who scored the Cardinals' two goals in their season-opening 2-1 win over Edgewood a week ago — were at it again Saint Mary's nonconference game against Marian on Friday.
Â
Matthews scored the game's first goal — off an assist from Loy — and added her second of the game with 11 seconds remaining in regulation, as the Cardinals pushed their season-opening winning streak to 2-0 with a 3-0 win over the Sabres.
Â
Matthews, who scored her first collegiate goal to open the scoring against Edgewood, was at it again against the Sabres, as the freshman broke a 0-0 deadlock with less than 15 minutes remaining in the first half — off an assist from Loy — to give the Cardinals a 1-0 advantage heading into the break.
Â
Kendall Archer (Draper, Utah) pushed the Cardinals' lead to 2-0 with her first of the season early in the second half, and Matthews closed out the scoring with her second of the game in the waning seconds.
Â
Gabriella Pederson (Chaska, Minn.) picked up her first shutout of the season — and eighth of her career — stopping both Marian shots, while Sabres' goalie Kylie Lange finished with six saves.
Â
The Cardinals (2-0-0 overall) are back in action on Sunday, heading to Ripon, Wis., for an 11 a.m. nonconference game against Ripon.
