WINONA, Minn. — When it comes to playing Martin Luther, the Saint Mary's University women's tennis team has the Knights' number.
And that number is 13
The Cardinals — who lost just seven games in the six singles matches — picked up their 13th straight win over Martin Luther Friday evening, rolling to a season-opening 9-0 nonconference victory at the Winona Tennis Center.
"The ladies started the season with a great performance," said Saint Mary's women's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg. "They were solid right through the lineup."
The Cardinals raced out to a 3-0 lead with convincing, 8-1, 8-2, and 8-1 wins in doubles, before rolling to six straight-set singles victories — including 6-0, 6-0 wins by
Cassandra Barr (Eau Claire, Wis.),
Maggie Frye (Colorado Springs, Colo.), and
Zoie Becker (St. James, Minn.).
Kennedy Morgan (Green Bay, Wis.) chipped in a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3, while
Emily Strezishar (East Grand Forks, Minn.) added a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6, and
Colleen Lois (Green Bay, Wis.) delivered a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at No. 1
The Cardinals (1-0 overall) face Iowa Central Community College in an exhibition match at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, before returning to regular-season action next Friday with a 6:30 p.m. nonconference showdown against Northwestern at Lifetime Fitness in White Bear Lake, Minn.
