WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary's University men's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg knew his Cardinals were going to have their hands full when they took the court against St. Thomas Saturday afternoon.
And, unfortunately for the Cardinal head coach, the Tommies didn't disappoint.
St. Thomas swept all three doubles matches and picked up four straight-set singles wins in dealing the Cardinals a 7-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at the Winona Tennis Center.
"We put up a good fight," said Halberg. "St. Thomas was just a little too deep for us."
Robbie Sobczak (Cloquet, Minn.) and
Trevor Smiley (Minnetonka, Minn.) recorded the Cardinals' two singles wins — Sobczak posting a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1, while Smiley needed a thired set, rallying from one set down to record a 5-7, 6-1, 10-7 victory at No. 3.
The Cardinals (0-2 MIAC, 4-3 overall) are right back in action Saturday evening, playing host to the University of Dubuque in a 5 p.m. nonconference match at the Winona Tennis Center.
