WINONA, Minn. — There was no rest for the weary Saint Mary's University men's tennis team when the Cardinals took the court Sunday for their third match in as many days.
Weary or not, the Cardinals had just enough gas left in the tank, jumping out to a 2-1 lead and getting four singles wins en route to a 6-3 nonconference win over UW-Superior at the Winona Tennis Center.
"This was an absolutely fantastic way to finish the weekend," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "We played a very tough Superior team and battled to a really satisfying victory.
"It was a great effort from all the players."
Robbie Sobczak (Cloquet, Minn.) and
Gabe Graves (Littleton, Colo.) teams for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles and
Nolan Smiley (Minnetonka, Minn.)/
Josh Janssen (Green Bay, Wis.) added an 8-7 (3) victory at No. 3 to give Saint Mary'
Brandon Kurilla (Hastings, Minn.), Graves, and Janssen added straight set singles wins at Nos. 2, 4, and 5, respectively, while
Trevor Smiley rallied from a set down for a 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 win at No. 3 to seal the win.
The Cardinals (4-2 overall) are back in action on their home courts at the Winona Tennis Center for a pair of matches next Saturday. Saint Mary's will face St. Thomas in a 12:30 p.m. MIAC matchup at 12:30 p.m., followed by a 5 p.m. showdown against the University of Dubuque.Â
