AUBURNDALE, Fla. — The Saint Mary's University baseball team held Albion to just three runs in six innings Monday afternoon.
Â
Unfortunately, over those other two at-bats, the Britons erupted for a pair of four-run innings, as Albion handed the Cardinals an 11-7 nonconference setback.
Â
Albion put together one of its two four-run innings in the second to grab an early 4-0 lead. Saint Mary's cut the deficit in half in the top of the third — getting RBI singles from
Justin Weinberg (Eagan, Minn.) and
Will Matthews (Geneva, Ill.).
Â
Saint Mary's pulled even, 4-4, in the fifth on a two-run fielder's choice by
Andy Tepp (tevens Point, Wis.) and took its first lead of the game on a Kody Kiel (Owatonna, Minn.) single in the top of the sixth.
Â
Albion answered Saint Mary's sixth-inning run with one of its own, before erupting for four-run inning No. 2 in the seventh and adding two more runs in the eight for an 11-5 advantage.
Â
The Cardinals put together a two-out rally in the ninth — getting an RBI single from Weinberg and scoring another run on a wild pitch to get within 11-7, but that was as close they would get in falling to 1-2 overall on the young season.
Â
Weinberg, Matthews, and
Tyler O'Brien (Belle Plaine, Minn.) all delivered a pair of hits against the Britons, while Matthews and Tepp drove in two runs each and
Matthew Piechowski (Hutchinson, Minn.) scored three times.
Â
Saint Mary's is back on the diamond on Tuesday, as the Cardinals square off against St. John Fisher in a 9-inning contest in Auburndale, Fla. Game time is set for noon.
