  SAINT MARY'S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT
• LAST NIGHT: Saint Mary's erased a 1-0 deficit with three unanswered goals, only to allow back-to-back-to-back goals by the Foresters — including the game-winner less than three minutes into overtime — as the Cardinals dropped their season-opener 4-3.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Tyson Liverance (Burford, Ontario), Ryan Stoynich (Calgary, Alberta), and Bud Winter (St. Louis, Mo.) scored the Cardinals' three goals Friday night.
• LENDING A HAND: Trevor Wilhelm (St. Louis, Mo.) picked up assists on two of SMU's three goals against Lake Forest Friday, while Jack Hatton (Naperville, Ill.), Matt Hutton (Carmel, Ind.), and Laudon Poellinger (La Crescent, Minn.) also picked up assists.
• GOAL NO. 1: Liverance's goal at 13:52 of the first period was the Cardinals' first goal of the 2021-22 season.
• POWER SURGE: Two of the Cardinals' three goals against Lake Forest Friday night were scored on the power-play. Saint Mary's finished the game 2-for-5 with the man advantage.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: A.J. Ruskowski (Traverse City, Mich.) made his first collegiate start in goal for the Cardinals against Lake Forest Friday, finishing with 28 saves.
• CLOSE CALLS: With Friday's 4-3, overtime loss to Lake Forest, five of the Cardinals' last seven games have been decided by one goal. … Saint Mary's has now played 26 games decided by one goal or less — including 15 that have gone into overtime — over the last four seasons.
• A YEAR AGO: The Cardinals are coming off a 5-6-0 showing in the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 season. In their last full season in 2019-20, Saint Mary's compiled a 9-14-2 overall mark — including a 6-9-2 effort in the MIAC.
• QUICK START: The Cardinals opened 2020-21 with four straight wins, marking the first time since 1972-73 that SMU opened with four straight wins. The 1972-73 team opened the season with 11 straight wins.
LAKE FOREST FORESTERS SCOUTING REPORT
• LAST NIGHT: Noah Furman scored 2:34 into overtime — capping a come-from-behind, 4-3 victory over Saint Mary's in the Foresters' season-opener.
• GOAL SCORERS: Josh Norman scored a pair of goals, and Will Lebel and Furman also found the back of the net for the Foresters against Saint Mary's Friday.
• LENDING A HAND: Cullen Kane assisted on two of Lake Forest's four goals Friday, while Erik Nilsson, Kyle Cote, Matteas Derraugh also recorded helpers for the Foresters.
• FIRST GOAL: Norman's goal 4:29 into the first period was Lake Forest's first goal of the 2021-22 season.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Carson Poulin finished with 23 saves in goal against the Cardinals Friday evening. Poulin closed out 2020-21 with a 2.03 goals-against-average and a .946 save percentage.
• A YEAR AGO: The Foresters kick off 2021-22 on the heels of a six-game season during the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 season, a year in which Lake Forest finished with a 1-5-0 record. In their last full season in 2019-20, the Foresters compiled an 18-6-3 overall record — including a 14-4-2 mark in NCHA play.
• ROUGH START: The Foresters lost their first five games a year ago — being outscored 20-5 in the process — before ending the season with a 2-1 road win over Aurora.
• POWER SURGE: After scoring five of their seven goals on the power play a year ago, the Foresters went 1-for-6 with the man advantage Friday.
• NCAA HOPES DASHED: Lake Forest was scheduled to face St. Thomas in the opening round of the 2020 NCAA Tournament on March 14, only to have the event cancelled due to the pandemic. It was the first time since 1990-91 that the Foresters had qualified for the NCAA Tournament and just the third time in program history.
