• FOR RECORD: The Cardinals head into their conference-opening series against Concordia sitting at 1-2-0 overall, having split with St. Norbert and losing to No. 4 UW-River Falls.

• LAST ACTION: Saint Mary’s dropped its second straight game on Saturday, surrendering four first-period goals and falling to fourth-ranked UW-River Falls 7-0 in the Cardinals’ home opener last Saturday. Ary Ziakas (Palatine, Ill.) and Jordan Keeley (St. Peter, Minn.) combined for 44 saves against the Falcons.

• HOME SWEET HOME: Friday’s showdown against Concordia is the second of five straight road contests for the Cardinals, who also face the Cobbers on Saturday, before welcoming Saint Benedict to the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena for a pair of conference games next weekend.

• POWER OUTAGE: After scoring four goals in their season-opening 4-1 win over St. Norbert, the Cardinals enter Friday’s game against Concordia having been shut out in each of their last two contests — falling to the Green Knights 4-0 and UW-River Falls 7-0.

• COLLEGIATE FIRSTS: Jordan Kurkowski (North Branch, Minn.)scored her first two collegiate goals and Anna Braun (Mantorville, Minn.) netted her first goal in a Cardinal uniform in SMU’s 4-1 win over St. Norbert on Oct. 29.

• GOAL NO. 1: Avrey Simonson (Waupaca, Wis.) scored the Cardinals’ first goal of the 2021-22 season, opening the scoring at 8:37 of the first period against St. Norbert on Oct. 29.

• LENDING A HAND: Jordan Modjeski (South Lyon, Mich.) picked up assists on two of Saint Mary’s four goals against St. Norbert on Oct. 29, while Kurkowski and Delaney Wolf (Bismarck, N.D.) also had helpers in the 4-1 win.

• MULTIPLE-POINTS: Kurkowski’s three-point game against St. Norbert (2 G, 1 A) on Oct. 29 was the first of her collegiate career, and the three-points were the most by a Cardinal since Anne Carmean (Spring Lake Park, Minn.) scored two goals and added an assist against Saint Benedict on March 13, 2021.

• YOUTH MOVEMENT: The Cardinals had nine freshmen in the lineup in their season-opening 4-1 win over St. Norbert on Oct. 29, with three of SMU’s four goals in the victory coming from players making their collegiate debuts.

• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Ziakas and Keeley have shared the goaltending duties this season. Ziakas has compiled a 4.50 goals-against-average and .845 save percentage in 120:00 minutes, while Keeley owns a 3.00 GAA and .914 save percentage in 60:00 minutes. … Ziakas has collected a team-leading 49 saves, with Keeley close behind with 32. … Ziakas recorded a pair of shutouts in 2020-21, making 35 saves in a 0-0 tie against Concordia on Feb. 6, before stopping all 31 shots she faced against Saint Benedict on March 14. 

• FIRST-GOAL ADVANTAGE: The team that has scored first has won all three of the Cardinals’ games this season. SMU scored first in beating St. Norbert 4-1 on Oct. 29, while the Green Knights and UW-River Falls both scored first in their two wins.

• A YEAR AGO: The Cardinals posted 2-6-2 record during the 10-game  2020-21 season. In their last full season in 2019-20, SMU finished 10-14-3 overall, including a 6-10-2, fifth-place showing in the MIAC. The Cardinals beat St. Thomas (4-2) and dropped a 4-1 decision to Gustavus in the 2020 MIAC Tournament.

• FOR THE RECORD: The Cobbers head into Friday’s MIAC opener against Saint Mary’s riding a season-opening two-game winning streak.

• LAST ACTION: Concordia picked up a pair of nonconference victories in their first two games of the season last weekend. CC beat visiting Finlandia 1-0 last Friday in the first game of the teams’ two-game nonconference series, before adding a 6-2 victory the following afternoon.

• TOSSING THE HAT: Abbey Hardwick scored three goals in the Cobbers’ 6-2, sweep-clinching victory over Finlandia last Saturday.

• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Maiah scored for the second game in a row and she and Hardwick have accounted for five of the Cobbers’ six goals through two games. Brenna Mjoness owns CC’s other goal.

• GOAL NO. 1: McCowan’s goal with 1:48 remaining in the third period was not only the game-winner in last Friday’s CC victory over Finlandia, it was also the Cobbers’ first goal of the season.

• LENDING A HAND: Jordie Egerdahl, Hannah Christian, and McKenzie Oelkers all share the team lead in assists with two each, while Mjoness, Paige Hanson, Libby Hinrichs, Grace Doering, and Lynze Swanson all own a single helper.

• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Kiana Flaig and Becca Macklin have shared the goaltending duties for the Cobbers, with each getting a start against Finlandia last weekend. Flaig stopped all 18 shots she faced en route to last Friday’s shutout, while Macklin finished with 12 saves in the rematch the following afternoon.

• SCORING IN ALL PHASES: The Cobbers have scored at even strength five times, while also netting one power-play and one shorthanded tally to account for their seven goals.

• FAST START, AND FINISH: The Cobbers have scored seven goals in two games — sandwiching three-goal first and third periods around a one-goal second stanza. CC’s opponents, meanwhile, have scored both of their goals in the second period.
