MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's hockey did not score a goal in its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener against Concordia — and the Cardinals didn't lose.
Â
Thanks to the play of goalie
Ary Ziakas (Palatine, Ill.).
Â
Ziakas kicked out all 35 shots she faced Saturday afternoon, as the Cardinals battled the Cobbers to a 0-0 overtime tie at the Moorhead Sports Center.
Â
The Cardinals' offense struggled to gain any momentum against the Cobbers, managing just 14 shots on goal — four in both the first and third, and just two in the second.
Â
But with Ziakas between the pipes, the Cardinals could not lose, as the senior netminder posted her second career shutout — stopping everything the Cobbers threw at her, including seven shots in the five-minute overtime period.
Â
The 0-0 stalemate was the Cardinals' first since battling St. Thomas to a 0-0 draw on Nov. 15, 2014.
Â
The Cardinals (0-0-1 MIAC, 0-1-1 overall) are back in action next Saturday, returning home to the Saint Mary's Ice Arena for a 7 p.m. conference matchup against Hamline.
