• FOR THE RECORD: Saint Mary’s enters Saturday’s rematch against Saint John’s sitting at 2-6-0 overall record — including a 1-2-0 record in conference play, thanks to Thursday’s 2-1 win over the Johnnies in St. Cloud, Minn.
• GAME 1 RECAP: Trevor Schroder (Des Moines, Iowa) and Kasyn Kruse (Luverne, Minn.) each scored their second goal of the season and Matt Sankner (Pennington, N.J.) kicked out 35 Johnnie shots, as the Cardinals beat SJU 2-1 at Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
• FINALLY BACK HOME: Last Thursday’s game at Saint John’s was the third straight road game for the Cardinals, who will be back on the road for two of their final three games of 2021. Following Saturday’s home rematch with the Johnnies, the Cardinals will close out the 2021 portion of their schedule with a road game at Lawrence on Nov. 23 and a home-and-home series against St. Olaf on Dec. 3-4.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Ryan Stoynich (Calgary, Alberta) enters Saturday’s second game against Saint John’s leading the team with three goals, one more than Schroder, Kruse, Matt Hutton (Carmel, Ind.), and Bud Winter (St. Louis, Mo.). Gabe Potyk (Lake Orion, Mich.), Laudon Poellinger (La Crescent, Minn.), Trevor Paradise (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Brady Lindauer (Cary, Ill.), Andrew Froese (Traverse City, Mich.), and Tyson Liverance (Burford, Ontario) have netted SMU’s other six goals.
• FIRST AS A CARDINAL: The Cardinals boast five players who have scored their first collegiate goals this season — Kruse, Paradise, Poellinger, Potyk, and Hutton.
• LENDING A HAND: Hutton, Schroder, Lindauer, Poellinger, and Trevor Wilhelm (St. Louis, Mo.) all share the team lead with three assists each, followed by Stoynich with two. Eleven other Cardinals have all collected one helper through eight games.
• POINT PRODUCERS: Stoynich (3 G, 2 A), Hutton (2 G, 3 A), and Schroder (2 G, 3 A) lead the team in points with five, followed by Lindauer (1 G, 3 A) and Poellinger (1 G, 3 A) with four; and Winter (2 G, 1 A), Kruse (2 G, 1 A) and Wilhelm (0 G, 3 A) with three points each.
• POWER SURGE: Six of the Cardinals’ 17 goals this season have been scored on the power play. Saint Mary’s is 6-for-33 with the man advantage.
• MULTIPLE-POINT PERFORMANCES: The Cardinals have had seven players post multiple-point games this season — led by Stoynich and Hutton, who have achieved the feat twice. Schroder, Paradise, Winter, Lindauer and Wilhelm have accounted for the other five.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Matt Sankner (Pennington, N.J.) recorded his first collegiate win with his 35-save effort against Saint John’s last Thursday. Sankner’s 35 saves were a career high. The freshman has now stopped 30 or more shots in two of his three starts this season, having recorded 33 saves against Lake Forest on Oct. 30. Sankner heads into Saturday’s rematch with Saint John’s carrying a 3.37 goals-against-average and .912 save percentage. … A.J. Ruskowski (Traverse City, Mich.) notched his first collegiate win on Nov. 5, making 28 saves in SMU’s 4-3 win over UW-Superior. Ruskowski followed up that effort by stopping a career-best 43 shots in the Cardinals’ 4-1 loss to UW-Eau Claire the following evening. … Ruskowski owns a 4.30 GAA and an .869 save percentage.
• FIRST CAREER STARTS: Ruskowski and Sankner each made their first collegiate starts in goal for the Cardinals against Lake Forest on Oct. 29-30. Ruskowski finished with 28 saves in SMU’s 4-3 overtime loss on Oct. 29, while Sankner kicked out 33 of the 35 Forester shots he faced the following afternoon.
• STREAKING ALONG: The Cardinals picked up their first win of the season on Nov. 5, snapping a season-opening three-game losing streak with a 4-3 win over UW-Superior. SMU put an end to its second three-game losing streak last Thursday with their 2-1 victory over Saint John’s.
• FIRST-GOAL SUCCESS: In seven of Saint Mary’s first eight games this season, the team that has scored first has gone on to win — the lone exception, last Thursday’s win over Saint John’s, in which Saint Mary’s scored the game’s final two goals for the 2-1 victory.
