  SAINT MARY'S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT
• FOR THE RECORD: Saint Mary's came up short in its season-opening nonconference series against Lake Forest last weekend, falling 4-3 in overtime in the opener last Friday, before dropping a 3-0 decision the following afternoon.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Wednesday's game against Lawrence is the first of three straight home games for the Cardinals, who went 3-2 in their five home contests during last season's 11-game, pandemic-shortened season.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Tyson Liverance (Burford, Ontario), Ryan Stoynich (Calgary, Alberta), and Bud Winter (St. Louis, Mo.) scored the Cardinals' three goals in last weekend's nonconference series against Lake Forest.
• LENDING A HAND: Trevor Wilhelm (St. Louis, Mo.) and Matt Hutton (Carmel, Ind.) picked up assists on two of SMU's three goals against Lake Forest last Friday, while Jack Hatton (Naperville, Ill.) and Laudon Poellinger (La Crescent, Minn.) also picked up assists.
• GOAL NO. 1: Liverance's goal at 13:52 of the first period was the Cardinals' first goal of the 2021-22 season.
• POWER SURGE: All three of the Cardinals' goals against Lake Forest last Friday night were scored on the power-play. Saint Mary's finished the game 3-for-5 with the man advantage.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: A.J. Ruskowski (Traverse City, Mich.) and Matt Sankner (Pennington, N.J.) each made their first collegiate starts in goal for the Cardinals against Lake Forest last weekend. Ruskowski finished with 28 saves in Friday's 4-3 overtime loss, while Sankner kicked out 33 of the 35 Forester shots he faced the following afternoon.
• CLOSE CALLS: With Friday's 4-3, overtime loss to Lake Forest, five of the Cardinals' last eight games have been decided by one goal. … Saint Mary's has now played 26 games decided by one goal or less — including 15 that have gone into overtime — over the last four seasons.
• QIUCK STARTERS: Saint Mary's has scored two of its three goals this season in the first period. On the flip side, the Cardinals have been outscored 4-0 in the third period and overtime.
• A YEAR AGO: The Cardinals finished 5-6-0 in the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 season. In their last full season in 2019-20, Saint Mary's compiled a 9-14-2 overall mark — including a 6-9-2 effort in the MIAC.
LAWRENCE VIKINGS SCOUTING REPORT
• FOR THE RECORD: The Vikings enter Wednesday's mid-week nonconference matchup against Saint Mary's on the heels of their nonconference split against Gustavus last weekend. Lawrence kicked off the season with a 5-2 win over the Gusties last Friday, but dropped the rematch 7-4 the following day.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Wednesday's game at Saint Mary's is the third of four straight road games for the Vikings, who went 2-2-0 in their four home contests during last season's nine-game schedule.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Lawrence erupted for nine goals — from eight different players — in its split against Gustavus last weekend. Vincent Dekumbis scored twice against the Gusties, while Zach Lodes, Oliver DeCroock, Ivan Galaguzov, Kyle Gierman, Tyler Jensen, Davis Kirkendall, and Zack Olen accounting for the other seven tallies.
• LENDING A HAND: Along with his goal, Lodes recorded three assists vs. Gustavus last weekend, while DeCrook picked up a pair of helpers.
• POINTS RACE: Lodes enters Wednesday's game vs. Saint Mary's owning a team-high four points, one more than Dekumbis and DeCroock, while Galaguzov, Gierman, Jensen, and Kirkendall all have two points.
• OPENING THE SCORING: Kirkendall netted the Vikings' first goal of the season, scoring at 8:18 of the first period in last Friday's 5-2 win over Gustavus.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Alex Mosquera started both games in goal for the Vikings against Gustavus last weekend, compiling a 4.05 goals-against-average and a .904 save percentage. Mosquera stopped 75 of the 83 shots he faced in the two games against the Gusties.
• MIDDLE MAN: Lawrence has scored five of its nine goals this season in the second period. The Vikings have also scored three goals in the first and one in the third. On the flip side, LU's opponents have netted four of their nine goals in the third period.
