WINONA, Minn. — It took the Saint Mary's University and Saint Benedict women's hockey team's more than 44 minutes to score the game's first goal Wednesday evening — but once they broke the ice, there were goals aplenty.
Â
Over the game's final 16:35 of regulation, the two teams combined for four goals — including two in the game's final 1:11.
Â
The end result, the Cardinals' second Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tie in three contests — this one a 2-2 deadlock against the Bennies at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.
Â
Sarah O'Brien (Littleton, Colo.) kicked off the third-period scoring barrage, netting her first collegiate goals — off an assist from
Sydney Green (East Bethel, Minn.) — to grab a 1-0 lead.
Â
Seven minutes later, the Bennies struck back on a goal by Brynn Sexauer — the first of her two goals on the night.
Â
Katie Devine (Glencoe, Ill.) appeared to be the hero for the Cardinals, netting the go-ahead goal with 1:11 to play in the final stanza.
Â
Unfortunately for coach
Sarah Murray, things aren't always as they appear, as Sexauer struck again — scoring just 30 seconds after Devine's tally to knot the game and send it to overtime.
Â
Ary Ziakas (Palatine, Ill.) finished with 20 saves in goal for the Cardinals, while CSB goalie Maggie Gilchrist kicked out 31 of the 33 Saint Mary's shots she faced.
Â
The Cardinals (0-1-2 MIAC, 0-2-2 overall) are back in action on Tuesday, entertaining St. Thomas in a 7 p.m. MIAC contest at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.
