SAINT MARY'S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT

Saint Mary's won its second straight game to open the season on Tuesday, outlasting Bethel 5-4 on the road. … The Cardinals' 2-0 start to the season marks the first time since sweeping Finlandia (9-3, 6-3) on Nov. 1-2, 2002 that SMU has opened the year with back-to-back wins. … With their two one-goal wins to open the season (4-3 over Gustavus and 5-4 vs. Bethel), Saint Mary's has now played 22 games decided by one goal or less — including 11 that went into overtime — in its last 54 games. … Ryan Stoynich (Calgary, Alberta), Trevor Schroeder (Des Moines, Iowa), Thomas Magnavite (Chicago, Ill.), Brady Lindauer (Cary, Ill.), and Sam Hanson (Eau Claire, Wis.) netted Saint Mary's five goals vs. Bethel on Tuesday. … Magnavite has now scored in both of the Cardinals' two games, while the other seven goals have come from seven different players. … Schroeder's second-period goal against Bethel was his first collegiate tally. The freshman also chipped in a pair of assists for his first multiple-point game in a Cardinal uniform. … Schroeder is the second player in as many games to net his first goal as a Cardinal, joining Andrew Froese (Traverse City, Mich.), who netted his first SMU goal against Gustavus on Jan. 30. … Froese collected a pair of assists vs. Bethel Tuesday to move into a share of the team lead in points (3) with Schroeder. … Jack Hatton (Naperville, Ill.) and Hanson have netted Saint Mary's two game-winning goals this season. … Connor Close (Des Moines, Iowa) stopped 33 Bethel shots in his first collegiate start in goal for the Cardinals on Tuesday. … Al Rogers (North Haven, Conn.) kicked out 32 of the Gusties' 35 shots in SMU's season-opener against Gustavus on Jan. 30 and has stopped 30 or more shots five times in his collegiate career. … Of the Cardinals' nine goals through two games, four have come in both the second and third periods. … Saint Mary's has scored first in both games this year.

CONCORDIA COBBER SCOUTING REPORT

The Cobbers enter Saturday's season-opener coming off a 10-5-1 MIAC showing a year ago. CC finished 14-11-2 overall — reaching the MIAC Tournament title game, where they fell to St. Thomas 3-2. … The Cobbers 32 points marked the second straight season in which CC has recorded 30 or more points in MIAC play. … Concordia's post-season appearance marked the eighth straight season, and the ninth time in the last 10 years, that the Cobbers have qualified for the MIAC Tournament. … CC's tournament title game against St. Thomas was its first since 2011 and its fourth in program history. … Tyler Bossert led the Cobbers in both assists (21) and points (27), while Aaron Herdt was the team-leader in goals with 13. … CC boasted five players with 10 or more points in 2019-20 — Bossert (27), Herdt (20), Quinn Fuchs (13), Jacen Bracko (10), and Tanner Okeson (10). … Concordia netted 15 special-team goals a year ago, owning 12 power-play goals and three short-handed tallies. … The Cobbers open 2020-21 wihtout the services of graduated senior goalie Jacob Stephan — who was named Co-MIAC Player of the Year last season, after leading all MIAC goaltenders in GAA (1.63), save percentage (.938), wins (8), and winning percentage (.773) in conference play. Overall, Stephan played in 18 of the team's 27 contests, posting a 2.34 GAA and .910 save percentage. … Concordia was unbeaten (11-0-1) when leading after two periods, while going 0-10-1 when trailing heading into the game's final 20 minutes. … CC finished 12-5-0 in games decided by two goals or less. … Concordia scored first in 17 of its 27 games, going 11-5-1.
