Cardinals top MSU-M for 2nd straight win

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team made it look easy Wednesday afternoon, as the Cardinals picked up their second straight nonconference victory, rolling to an 8-1 win over Minnesota State-Mankato at the Winona Tennis Center.

"It was a great win for the ladies over an NCAA Division II opponent," said Saint Mary's coach Jeff Halberg. "Mankato had a number of big hitters, but we played some excellent percentage tennis to outlast them."

Saint Mary's opened with three straight doubles wins — getting 8-4 victories by Colleen Lois (Green Bay, Wis.)/Kennedy Morgan (Green Bay, Wis.) at No. 1 and Emily Henderson (Jordan, Minn.)/Maddie Dosser (St. Paul, Minn.) at No. 3, and an 8-6 victory by Kailee Johnson (Rochester, Minn.)/Maggie Frye (Colorado Springs, Colo.) at No. 2.

And the momentum carried over into singles, where Saint Mary's picked up five wins in straight sets to seal the win. Zoie Becker (St. James, Minn.) extended her season-opening winning streak to three with her second consecutive 6-0, 6-0 victory, this one at No. 4.

The Cardinals (2-1 overall) are back in action this weekend, hosting St. Catheirne in a 5:30 p.m. MIAC matchup on Friday, before entertaining Wartburg in a 12:30 p.m. nonconfernece match on Saturday. Both contests will be held at the Winona Tennis Center.
