ROSEVILLE, Minn. — It took a little longer than they had hoped, but the Saint Mary's University fastpitch softball finally notched Win No. 1 of the 2021 season — and in the process gave interim head coach
Sam Borawski collegiate coaching win No. 1.
Â
The Cardinals rebounded from a 7-0 loss in Game 1 against Northwestern Thursday, erupting for 10 runs in beating the Eagles 10-7 and earning a split in their nonconference doubleheader at Reynolds Field.
Â
Northwestern dominated the opener, holding Saint Mary's to just five hits — one each from
Justine Schultz (Winona, Minn.),
Paige Gudmundson (Plainview, Minn.),
Erin Sullivan (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.),
Amy Kulaga (Riverside, Ill.) and
Lexi Brooks (Searcy, Ark.).
Â
After plating just two runs in their first three games combined, however, the Cardinals bats finally came to life in the nightcap – erupting for 10 runs on 13 hits.
Â
The Cardinals scored once in the first, three times in the third, twice in the fourth, and four times in the sixth en route to their first win of the season.
Â
Gudmundson added three hits in the nightcap, while Sullivan, Brooks and
Jordan Meyers (Eyota, Minn.) all chipped in two hits.
Â
The Cardinals (1-3 overall) are back in action — and back at Northwestern's Reynolds Field — on Sunday, squaring off against St. Scholastica in a nonconference, neutral-site doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
