WINONA, Minn. —Â
Ary Ziakas (Palatine, Ill.) was one of four seniors honored during Senior Day festivities Saturday afternoon at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.
Â
And the senior goalie kept the spotlight shining brightly on her during the Cardinals' nonconference showdown against Saint Benedict.
Â
Ziakas stopped all 31 shots she faced en route to her second shutout of the season — and the Cardinals gave her more than enough offensive support, scoring a season-high four goals — as Saint Mary's blanked the Bennies 4-0.
Â
The Cardinals waited until the waning minutes of the first period to unlock the scoreless tie, as
Anne Carmean (Spring Lake Park, Minn.) recorded her first collegiate goal, beating Bennies' goalie Maggie Gilchrist with just 1:40 to play in the opening frame.
Kaley Manglitz (Onalaska, Wis.) collected the assist on Carmean's first Cardinal tally.
Â
It took Carmean eight games and 10 minutes to notch Goal No. 1 of her career, but it only took 20 more minutes to notch No. 2, as the freshman tipped an
Avrey Simonson (Waupaca, Wis.) shot past Gilchrist for a 2-0 Cardinal lea.
Â
The Cardinals had so much fun scoring single goals in each of the first two periods, they decided to double their run in the third — getting back-to-back goals from
Sydney Green (East Bethel, Minn.) and
Sarah O'Brien (Littleton, Colo.) three minutes apart midway through the period to make it 4-0.
Â
The Cardinals (2-5-2 overall) are right back in action on Sunday, traveling to St. Thomas Arena in Mendota Heights, Minn., for a 2 p.m. matchup against St. Thomas. The teams will then return to the Saint Mary's Ice Arena on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. season finale for both squads
