EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Saint Mary's University's
Trevor Smiley (Minnetonka, Minn.) made the most of his last collegiate match against St. Thomas Sunday afternoon.
Â
Smiley put together a match to remember, as the Cardinal junior saved his best for last, beating the Tommies for the first — and last — time ever, posting a three-set, come-from-behind win at No. 4 singles.
Â
Unfortunately for men's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg, Smiley's win was the only one Saint Mary's would muster, as St. Thomas dealt the Cardinals an 8-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at Life Time Athletic.
Â
"The guys put up a good battle today," Halberg said. "Trevor played a phenomenal match and was truly deserving of the victory."
Â
Smiley dropped the opening set in his No. 4 singles match against UST's Tristan Fjestad 6-2, but rallied for a 7-6 (2) win in the second set and outlasted Fjestad 10-8 in the third and final set to account for the Cardinals' lone win.
Â
St. Thomas — which will be leaving the MIAC after this season — picked up straight-set wins in the other five singles matches — dropping just 14 games in the five contests — while adding 8-3, 8-3, 8-2 victories in the three doubles matches.
Â
The Cardinals (1-3 MIAC, 3-3 overall) are now off until April 2, when they entertain Northwestern in a nonconference match at the Winona Tennis Center. First serve is set for noon.
