MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's soccer team picked up its first win of the season Sunday afternoon, a 2-1 win over Augsburg — and the Cardinals only needed to score one goal to do it.
Â
With the score tied at 1-1 and 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Saint Mary's
Cerim Palislamovic (Jacksonville, Fla.) sent a cross toward the front of the net that deflected off an Augsburg defender and into the Auggie goal to give the Cardinals the 2-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win at Edor Nelson Field.
Â
Wally Barros (Santa Maria da Boa Vista, Brazil) got the Cardinals on the board first, scoring Saint Mary's first goal of the season in the 30
th minute off an assist from
Diego Rivera (Chicago, Ill.).
Â
Saint Mary's would maintain that one-goal advantage through the final 15 minutes of the opening half and the first 16 minutes of the second half, when Tomas Piza-Gonzalez knotted the game at 1-1 with his first of the season.
Â
Neither team would be able to generate the go-ahead goal until Palislamovic's late-game cross resulted in the Auggie own goal — and the Cardinal victory.
Â
Daniel Sessler (Brookfield, Ill.) — who made seven saves in his first collegiate start against St. Thomas last Thursday — stopped four of the Auggies' five shots on goal in earning his first collegiate win.
Â
The Cardinals (1-1-0 MIAC, 1-1-0 overall) are back in action next Sunday, entertaining Concordia in a 3:30 p.m. conference showdown at Ochrymowycz Field in Winona, Minn.
