WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team had no answer for Macalester's depth Sunday afternoon, as the Scots handed the Cardinals an 8-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at the Winona Tennis Center.
Â
"Macalester was a bridge too far today," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "I thought the guys put up an incredible effort, but Macalester is tough, and just too deep.
Â
"You have to tip your caps to (Macalester), they played a fantastic match."
Â
Reilly Fredell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) picked up Saint Mary's lone win, posting a 6-4, 7-2 victory at No. 6 singles.
Â
The Cardinals (1-4 MIAC, 3-6 overall) have another busy weekend ahead, as they travel to St. Peter, Minn., for a 1:30 p.m. conference match against Gustavus on Saturday, before turning around and facing Macalester in a 9 a.m. contest at the Winona Tennis Center the following morning.
