ST. PAUL, Minn. — It was one of those days for the Saint Mary's University fastpitch softball team against St. Catherine Sunday afternoon.
The Wildcats came out swinging — literally — in the opening game of the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader, scoring 10 times in the first two innings en route to a 12-0, five-inning victory.
In the nightcap, it was the Cardinals who took a page from their hosts, scoring three times in their first at-bat. That, however, would be all the offense Saint Mary's could muster, and the Wildcats took advantage, scoring the game's final eight runs in completing the sweep with an 8-3 victory in the nightcap.
The high-powered St. Catherine offense was unstoppable in Game 1, scoring three times in its first at-bat, before erupting for seven, second-inning runs for a 10-0 advantage and adding two more runs in the third to round out the scoring.
SCU pitcher Kathryn Proper limited the Cardinals to just three hits in Game 1 — a double by
Hallie Schmeling (Onalaska, Wis.) and singles by
Paige Gudmundson (Plainview, Minn.) and
Erin Sullivan (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.).
The Cardinals appeared to have their offense back on track to start Game 2, getting an RBI double from Sullivan and scoring twice more on a Wildcat throwing error for a quick, 3-0 lead.
St. Catherine got one run back in the third, and added two more in the fourth to knot the game at 3-3. But the Wildcats weren't finished, scoring twice more in the fifth and three times in the sixth to seal the sweep-clinching 8-3 victory.
Amber Chow (West St. Paul, Minn.) went 3-for-4 with a run scored in the nightcap, while
Jordan Meyers (Eyota, Minn.) and
Amy Kulaga (Riverside, Ill.) each chipped in two hits to account for seven of Saint Mary's 10 hits.
The Cardinals (3-9 MIAC, 6-18 overall) are back in action — and back on the road — on Wednesday, traveling to Northfield, Minn., for a 3:30 p.m. conference doubleheader against Carleton.
