WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University fastpitch softball team certainly had a flair for the dramatic Saturday afternoon, posting a pair of walk-off wins over Augsburg.
Â
And the Cardinals were back on the diamond — and once again found themselves in dire need of some late-game magic.
Â
This time around, however, the Cardinals came up empty.
Â
Bethel held Saint Mary's to one run on just six hits over 13 innings, as the Royals left the Saint Mary's Field with a 6-0, 10-1 sweep of the Cardinals Sunday afternoon.
Â
The Royals scored single runs in the second and fourth innings of Game 1, before posting back-to-back two-run innings in the sixth and seventh en route to the 6-0 victory.
Â
Saint Mary's managed just two hits off BU starting pitcher Kayla Simacek — a two-out,
Amber Chow (West St. Paul, Minn.) single in the first and a two-out single by
Justine Schultz (Winona, Minn.) in the sixth.
Cassie Sutor (Chicago, Ill.) suffered the pitching loss for Saint Mary's, allowing six runs on 10 hits, while walking six and striking out four.
Â
It was more of the same in the nightcap, as Bethel kept its offense running in high gear, and the Saint Mary's offense was left spinning its wheels.
Â
Bethel scored in four of the six innings it batted in Game 2, plating one run in the first, two in the third, three in the fifth, and four in the sixth. Saint Mary's broke its scoreless drought in the bottom of the sixth, as Schultz doubled, moved to third on an infield single by
Jordan Meyers (Eyota, Minn.) and scored on a double-steal.
Â
Meyers had two of Saint Mary's four hits in the nightcap, while Schultz and
Erin Sullivan (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) had the other two.
Â
The Cardinals (5-10 MIAC, 8-19 overall) are back in action on Wednesday, traveling to St. Joseph, Minn., for a 3:30 p.m. conference doubleheader against Saint Benedict.
