ST. JOSEPH, Minn. — With the season already shortened to just eight games, the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team had to find a way to squeeze as much soccer as possible out each game.
Â
And the Cardinals did just that Sunday afternoon — this time playing 20 extra minutes in their matchup against Saint Benedict.
Â
For the second straight game, the Cardinals found themselves deadlocked at 1-1 after regulation time.
Â
Unlike their most recent game — in which
Jordyn Matthews (Seattle, Wash.) scored five minutes into OT to give Saint Mary's a 2-1 win over Concordia — this time around, there would be no overtime magic, as the two teams battled to a 1-1 draw.
Â
Statistically speaking, the Cardinals dominated the host Bennies, holding an 18-4 advantage in shots — including 8-3 in shots on goal.
Â
Problem was, one of the Bennies' three shots on goal — their very first attempt of the game — found the back of the net, and CSB maintained that one-goal advantage through the first 86 minutes of the 90-minute contest.
Â
Enter Matthews
Â
Matthews — the hero of Saint Mary's 2-1, overtime win over Concordia on April 17 — pulled the Cardinals even, scoring her second goal of the season with just 17 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.
Â
Neither team could break the 1-1 stalemate through the two 10-minute overtimes, marking the Cardinals' first tie of the season, and first since playing Carleton to a 1-1 draw on Oct. 15, 2019.
Â
The Cardinals (2-1-1 overall) are back in action on Thursday, heading to St .Paul, Minn., for a 3:30 p.m. matchup against St. Catherine.
