NORTHFIELD, Minn. — If there's one thing to be said about the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team after two exhibition games, it's that the Cardinals are fit to be tied.
Â
For the second straight contest, the Cardinals had to settle for a stalemate — battling St. Olaf to a 1-1 deadlock at Rolf Melby Field Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Cardinals found themselves trailing at the break, giving up a penalty kick goal to the Oles' Thiermo Gueve in the 17th minute.
Â
The break certainly reenergized the Cardinals, as Saint Mary's needed just three minutes of the second half to net the equalizer off the foot of
Eli Szymanski (La Crosse, Wis.).
Â
And that would prove to be the extent of the offensive fireworks, as Saint Mary's settled for its second straight 1-1 draw.
Â
Cardinal goalkeeper
Daniel Sessler (Brookfield, Ill.) stopped four of the five St. Olaf shots he faced, while Saint Mary's finished with four shots on goal.
Â
Saint Mary's officially opens its fall-to-spring season on Thursday, entertaining St. Thomas in a 7 p.m. Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Ochrymowycz Field.
