Cardinals play Oles to 1-1 deadlock

NORTHFIELD, Minn. — If there's one thing to be said about the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team after two exhibition games, it's that the Cardinals are fit to be tied.

For the second straight contest, the Cardinals had to settle for a stalemate — battling St. Olaf to a 1-1 deadlock at Rolf Melby Field Saturday afternoon.

The Cardinals found themselves trailing at the break, giving up a penalty kick goal to the Oles' Thiermo Gueve in the 17th minute.

The break certainly reenergized the Cardinals, as Saint Mary's needed just three minutes of the second half to net the equalizer off the foot of Eli Szymanski (La Crosse, Wis.).

And that would prove to be the extent of the offensive fireworks, as Saint Mary's settled for its second straight 1-1 draw.

Cardinal goalkeeper Daniel Sessler (Brookfield, Ill.) stopped four of the five St. Olaf shots he faced, while Saint Mary's finished with four shots on goal.

Saint Mary's officially opens its fall-to-spring season on Thursday, entertaining St. Thomas in a 7 p.m. Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Ochrymowycz Field.
